This content reflects observational insights and lived community experiences. It does not constitute legal advice — always consult a qualified professional for your specific circumstances.
A McKenzie Friend is a general court helper who can assist with any type of case, and is a free alternative to a solicitor for things like small claims mediation.
McKenzie Friends support litigants in person — most commonly in family court. Giving legal advice is not a reserved legal activity, and the 2010 Practice Guidance allows a McKenzie Friend to give advice on any aspect of the conduct of the case. What they cannot do, unless the court gives permission, is conduct litigation for you or speak for you in court. A McKenzie Friend can help you prepare, organise your documents, take notes, and offer moral support in court. As for small claims mediation: McKenzie Friends are not typically used in the small claims track, which is part of the civil court system and has its own processes and cost rules. If you need legal advice, speak to a solicitor or contact Citizens Advice for free initial guidance.
This insight was contributed by someone who has been through the family court system. Bridge The Gap is deeply grateful to everyone who shares their experience — your honesty helps bridge the gap for the next person still in it.
Download the card and post it on Facebook, LinkedIn, or wherever you're active. Every share helps another litigant find this before their hearing.
