What People Expect

People who separated long ago and have lived apart without problems assume their financial ties ended when they split up.

Court Reality

Separating without a court order leaves financial claims open, however long ago it was. In RRE v JPR [2026] EWFC 7, the couple lived apart amicably for about eight years before a dispute over money held in one name led to proceedings. Only a court order, such as a consent order, closes claims.
