People treat any date in a solicitor's letter as binding.
Before proceedings start, the pre-application protocol (PD 9A, para 29) says a reasonable time for an unrepresented person to reply "may be 14 days". SRA guidance says unrepresented parties should not face artificially short deadlines, and Resolution's guide tells its members to avoid unnecessary deadlines and explain any urgency. A date in a court order is different: that one binds you. Rules and orders differ here: check whether the date comes from the letter or from your order.
