The High Cost of Navigating Family Court Alone

1 min read

This content reflects observational insights and lived community experiences. It does not constitute legal advice — always consult a qualified professional for your specific circumstances.

I spent years fighting through the family court system, enduring dozens of hearings that left me feeling completely broken. From the start, I felt the process was biased against me, and I was treated as if I were a criminal rather than a parent trying to protect my child. I raised serious concerns about my child's safety, but my warnings were ignored, and the court consistently sided against me. The experience was traumatic, and I felt entirely alone as I faced hostile officials and a system that seemed determined to grind me down. Looking back, I realize that trying to navigate this complex and emotionally draining process without any support was a mistake. Had I known about the role of a McKenzie Friend—someone who could have sat beside me, helped me organize my paperwork, taken notes, and provided the calm, objective guidance I desperately needed—the outcome might have been different. Instead, I was left to face the courtroom alone, feeling powerless and overwhelmed, which ultimately made it impossible to effectively present my case or ensure my voice was heard.

The Reality

The family court system can be deeply isolating and adversarial, often leaving parents feeling unheard and unsupported. Without objective guidance, litigants may struggle to manage the intense emotional toll of the process. A McKenzie Friend can provide the necessary moral support, help organize case papers, and offer quiet advice, which helps litigants remain composed and focused on the facts during high-pressure hearings.
