Legal Estate

1 min read

The formal legal ownership of a property as registered at the Land Registry. This is distinct from the beneficial interest (the right to benefit from the property). A financial order can transfer the legal estate, the beneficial interest, or both.

In Plain English

This is the official legal ownership of a property as recorded on government land records. Even if you have a right to the money from a house sale, your name might not be on the actual legal title or estate.
