What People Expect

Once a child has been taken abroad, the only remedy is a civil court order which can take months.

Court Reality

Taking or sending a child out of the UK without the required consent is a criminal offence under the Child Abduction Act 1984 (keeping a child abroad after a lawful trip is not generally covered). For civil recovery, the 1980 Hague Convention provides a fast-track return mechanism through the International Child Abduction and Contact Unit (ICACU). Act quickly — delays can weaken your case.
